Y5 Net Zero Island Competition

This year, our Year 5 students had the incredible opportunity to take part in the exciting Net Zero Island competition (in partnership with Northern Gas Networks), where they explored the future of energy and sustainability. Their mission? To design an island that could achieve net-zero carbon emissions while comparing renewable energy sources to traditional fossil fuels.

Throughout the project, students were tasked with researching different types of energy sources—such as wind, solar, hydro, and tidal power—and evaluating how these renewable resources can replace fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. They worked in groups to develop creative, sustainable solutions for powering their imaginary island, considering not just the environment, but also economic and practical aspects.

The highlight of the project was when the students had the chance to present their ideas to Alex, a representative from Northern Gas Networks. Alex shared insights into the current challenges and opportunities in the energy sector, especially the shift towards cleaner, greener energy solutions how their designs could help reduce carbon footprints and contribute to a sustainable future.

Their presentations were thoughtful, creative, and full of passion for a cleaner planet, impressing Alex with their knowledge and innovative ideas. This experience gave the children a deeper understanding of the real-world implications of energy use and the importance of transitioning to renewable sources.

Participating in this competition not only allowed our students to gain knowledge about renewable energy, but it also helped them develop important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and public speaking. They learned that every small step towards sustainability counts, and how they, as the next generation, can play a key role in shaping a better, greener world.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 students for their hard work and dedication throughout the project, and we’re grateful to Alex and Northern Gas Networks for her support and expertise. This competition has sparked an exciting journey towards a more sustainable future, and we can’t wait to see how our students continue to grow as environmental leaders!

Keep up the great work, Year 5!
