Marvellous Monday

Good morning everyone I hope you have had a good rest this weekend. Thank you all for your feedback on the slideshow. Hopefully it will make the children smile. It made us smile, I will always think of them as my rainbow class!! After speaking to lots of parents this week I think the novelty of home schooling is wearing off now. As a staff, we had planned VE celebrations in school for this week. Therefore, today is a start of a different sort of week. If we were in school we would be working in a different way because on Friday we are celebrating VE day.

VE Day took place on 8th May 1945. VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. It marked the end of World War II in Europe. The day was a public holiday, where people sang and danced outside their homes, and held street parties. This week our work will be leading up to a celebration on Friday. School is closed on Friday so your fun Friday will be having a celebration at home. We are not using White rose Maths this week as lots of our maths is going to concentrate on playing traditional games which can help your number brain.

People will look back at 2020 in history books in the future so we will be a big part of that history. I saw a lovely idea of making a memory tree that might be a nice thing to do with your children so they can talk about the time they have to stay at home.

I hope you enjoy the activities. Don’t forget grown – ups the list of activities is a guide. Please don’t get stressed and feel you have to complete all of them.

Have fun xxx

Monday’s tasks

Phonics

Watch YouTube for your daily phonics work. Today the sounds are:

Set 1 – v
Set 2 – air
Set 3 – o – e

Pairs – You need to choose some sounds or words your child is learning. Copy them onto card. Concentrate on 5 sounds/words to start with copying them out twice.

This can be played at different levels – one child might just be matching letter shapes and hearing the adult name the letter another could be turning over the letter and naming it. Also good for developing visual memory of where previously turned cards are and game playing skills (initially they keep turning the cards that are nearest to them, every time!). Just make the card on think card so that the letters cannot be seen through the back!

Literacy This week we are thinking about the special soldiers who fought in the war. Draw a picture of someone who is special to you. Write a sentence to say why they are special.
Maths During the war children didn’t have lap tops or tablets, they enjoyed playing traditional games so lots of your maths work this week is based on playing games. The first one today is to play snakes and ladders. You might already have this game at home or you might might want to use the one that I’ve included which only goes up to number 20. Remember the rules. You need a counter to represent who is playing roll your dice and move your counter around the board moving it the number of times that is shown on the dice eg roll a 3 move 3 places. If you land on a ladder move up the ladder to your new square. If you land on a snake slide down the snake. The winner is the first one to the top of the board. Good luck!
Other areas of learning You are going to think about what memories you have about working from home eg drawing rainbows, making ladybirds, going for walks etc. Can you find a strong twig on one of your walks and decorate it? You could use an empty pop or water bottle or box to put it in and put some stones in the bottom.

If you go to YouTube and google Persil play with purpose memory tree there is a short video which shows children making their own tree.
