Naomi from the D.L.I came to visit year 6 to help them learn more about how people were affected by WW1.
The first part of the workshop explored the lives of the soldiers. The children used both primary and secondary sources of evidence to learn more about them and their experience of WW1, all of which were very different to one another. The children really enjoyed handling the artefacts but had to wear gloves as some are over 100 years old.
Then like soldiers we had drill practice. Naomi, our Commander, taught us how to stand to attention, at ease and how to to salute to higher ranking officers and royalty. We then marched in formation back into school.
The afternoon workshops looked at how the war affected people still living in County Durham. Each group had a box and using only the clues, had to piece together the story of how they were affected. The children tried acting out a short scene to tell their stories.
The day ended with a quiet candle lit reflection, reflecting on those lives lost and writing a prayer on a poppy to share on Remembrance Day.
